without you

a small town
a bitter & cruel town
a most unwelcoming town
is my hometown

every day i pause
i listen
everything is a sign
that you & i
are still aligned
every song
every fucking song

a black sheep
a pariah
you were the only time
i belonged
you were the only time
i felt at home

twenty-two years ago
we tore each other
twenty-two years ago
we broke each other’s
twenty-two years ago
i lost you

today i got invited
to my small town high school
called on to face my life & to wonder,
have i lived?

an invitation to crush my soul
& leave me
i will not survive this
this one more thing
without you.
